The government’s long-awaited Defence Investment Plan has finally landed, and in the latest episode of The Maritime Forecast Podcast, Develop Consulting’s Maritime Director Darren Jones sat down with Mark Albon, Director of the Maritime Defence and Security Group at the Society of Maritime Industries, to work out what it actually means for the UK’s maritime supply chain.

Our Panel:

Darren Jones, Maritime Director at Develop Consulting

Mark Albon, Director of the Maritime Defence and Security Group at the Society of Maritime Industries

Key Topics:

The Real Opportunity: The Defence Investment Plan commits £298 billion over four years, providing industry with long-awaited certainty. While few were surprised by the content, the publication finally gives businesses the confidence to start planning investment, recruitment and capability for the years ahead.

The Real Challenge: Publishing the plan is only the first step. The industry’s focus has already shifted from funding announcements to execution, with the biggest challenge now being whether the UK defence and maritime sectors can actually deliver against the ambitions set out in the plan.

Sovereign Capability vs. Buying British: The episode challenges the assumption that “Buy British” is the answer. Instead, it argues that the UK must first define which critical capabilities need to remain sovereign and resilient, recognising that modern defence programmes rely on complex international supply chains and trade agreements.

The Skills Challenge: Despite perceptions that the UK lacks shipbuilding capacity, physical infrastructure isn’t the biggest constraint. The limiting factor is having enough skilled people, apprentices and experienced workers to make full use of existing facilities.

Don’t Stop to Review – Start to Deliver: “We’ve waited a year to get here… we’ve got demand signal. We need to get on with it.” – Mark Alburn

The Industry’s Message: Regardless of future political leadership, the priority is maintaining momentum. Industry wants government to build on the Defence Investment Plan through faster procurement and additional investment—not another review that delays delivery and undermines confidence.

Who Should Listen:

Defence and maritime executives, shipbuilding leaders, supply chain businesses, defence procurement professionals, operational excellence specialists, policymakers, and anyone involved in delivering the UK’s Defence Investment Plan, sovereign capability, or the future of the UK maritime industry.
