Community Hospital Design

• 2,644 m2 saving in floor capacity
• 1,383 m2 saving in administrative floor space through proposed centralisation
• 31% improvement in critical inter-department accessibility

At the commencement of the project, it was decided that the team were to develop and facilitate a value management workshop. The aim of this workshop was to help the team achieve the essential functions of the project at the lowest total cost, consistent with the required levels of performance and quality. The workshop was then broken down into 5 phases which included:

Information Phase
During the information phase the team worked on identifying the client’s drivers and reviewing the top level process flows between the wards, clinics/centre, pharmacy, operational support services, training and administration departments. The team then worked on establishing the assessment criteria selection that would be used for the stacking design options.

Analysis Phase
A number of brainstorm workshops were conducted to analyse the information gathered to help identify key issues and concerns with the design options. A functional analysis was conducted to help establish the system links and testing parameters.

Creative Phase
During this phase the team set out to develop 6 building stack options that would be considered to be the best fit design option to achieve client’s project drivers.

Evaluation Phase
The design options were then assessed and evaluated based on the agreed criteria selection which enabled the team to highlight the benefits and restraints of each option. These options where then reviewed using an inter-dependency relationship methodology to validate criticality to design and hospital performance. These options were then ranked to determine the best fit option to move forward with.

Development and Reporting Phase
The last stage of the workshop consisted of the team validating and snagging the detailed designs of the the building and operational requirements. Once completed a proposal was developed with the preferred option along with a robust strategy for implementation.
