Leaders within the maritime sector are being invited to tour a world-class leading car factory to see the parallels between automotive and maritime manufacturing excellence.
Develop Consulting is hosting an exclusive operational excellence event for senior maritime leaders at the BMW MINI manufacturing facility in Oxford on 15 April 2026.

The event, open to members of the Society of Maritime Industries (SMI), will bring together Operations Directors and Managers from across the UK maritime sector to explore how Lean Thinking can transform shipyard and maritime manufacturing performance.
Attendees will gain insights into Lean methodology from industry experts, discover real-world case studies from maritime and manufacturing sectors, and experience a guided tour of the world-class BMW MINI facility. The Oxford plant, which has received a £600 million investment in new electric models, is globally recognised for its operational excellence and provides a unique opportunity to see Lean principles in action.
“The maritime industry faces significant challenges including rising costs, complex supply chains and capacity constraints,” said Darren Jones, Maritime Director at Develop Consulting. “Leading shipyards and maritime manufacturers are turning to Lean Thinking for process transformation and maximising workforce potential. This event provides a unique opportunity for senior leaders to see these principles in action and network with peers facing similar operational challenges,” he added.
The half-day event, running from noon to 4pm, will address key maritime operational challenges including asset management and vessel availability, production planning, technical management, quality and compliance requirements, and major infrastructure investment programmes.
Develop Consulting recently launched its dedicated maritime sector initiative, bringing its proven track record from rail, aerospace and automotive manufacturing into shipbuilding and maritime operations. The consultancy is a member of the Society of Maritime Industries.
